Online Payments in Morocco: Integrating CMI on Your Site

How online payments work in Morocco, the role of CMI, the alternatives, the fees, and how to integrate it cleanly into your e-commerce site or app.

Online Payments in Morocco: Integrating CMI on Your Site

Accepting online payment is the step that turns a catalogue into a real store. In Morocco, this most often goes through CMI, yet the topic still intimidates many businesses. Here is how online payment works in Morocco in 2026, what to plan for, and how to integrate it cleanly.

CMI, the central payment player in Morocco

The Centre Monétique Interbancaire (CMI) is the long-standing intermediary that authorises and processes card payments in Morocco. To accept Moroccan cards online, most merchants go through a CMI agreement, which involves an application, a validation step and integrating a payment gateway into your site or app.

The steps to accept payments

  1. Have a legal entity and a Moroccan business bank account.
  2. Build the CMI file through your bank or directly: supporting documents, a compliant site (legal notice, terms of sale, privacy policy, clear contact page).
  3. Validation and compliance: CMI checks that your site meets the requirements (security, price transparency, terms).
  4. Technical integration: connect the payment gateway (secure redirect or API integration) to your e-commerce site or app.
  5. Testing: validate the successful, failed and refunded payment paths before going live.

Alternatives and complements to CMI

  • Cash on delivery is still very common in Morocco and reassures a portion of buyers. Many stores offer both.
  • International gateways (Stripe, PayPal) are mainly useful for collecting foreign cards, for example if you sell internationally, as we set up for premium stores.
  • Wallets and mobile solutions are growing and worth watching depending on your target.

Fees to anticipate

Expect a setup fee, a per-transaction commission (a percentage of the amount, varying with your profile and volume), and sometimes a subscription. These fees are negotiable with volume. Build them into your margin from the start so you aren’t surprised.

Integrating payment into the experience

Technical integration isn’t enough: payment must sit within a smooth journey. A clear funnel, visible payment methods, trust signals (security, returns, contact), and a flawless mobile experience, because most purchases happen on smartphone in Morocco. A poorly integrated payment makes people abandon the cart right before conversion.

At Netspace, online payment is part of our mobile & e-commerce projects: CMI or international gateway integration, designed inside a funnel built to convert. To frame your store, let’s talk.
